Wooden boardroom table with a view over the city

Product photography and art direction for a small ceramics studio.

01

Challenge

Hollow makes quiet, unglazed ceramics that looked flat and interchangeable in bright catalog photography. The studio’s online shop made every piece appear the same size and the same weight. Customers could not sense the texture that makes the work special, and many asked whether the objects were actually handmade.

02

Approach

We moved the shoot to a single window and photographed every piece in hard side light. Each object was given the same camera height and a plain ground, so that form and surface did all the work. We then edited 400 frames down to 24, using one rule: keep the image only if it shows how the piece was made.

We photographed the shadow as carefully as the cup.

Outcome

The studio now reuses the same setup for each new collection, so that its shop stays consistent as the range grows.

Noa cut our brief in half on the first day. The work that followed was simpler than we expected, and it has held up for three years.
