Handshake between two people in dark suits

A quarterly food journal designed around one typeface and one paper stock.

01

Challenge

Salt & Paper wanted a printed journal that felt considered, on a budget that left little room for special finishes. Earlier issues changed format each time, which made the journal expensive to produce and hard to recognize on a shelf. The publisher needed a format that could carry very different stories and stay the same.

02

Approach

We fixed the decisions most journals reopen every issue: one typeface, one uncoated stock, and one page grid. Photographs always run in black and white and always bleed on one side. Those limits gave the small team more time for editing, and they made each cover immediately recognizable as part of a series.

One typeface. One paper. Four issues a year.

Outcome

The format has stayed unchanged across every issue. Production now takes less time because the layout questions were settled once.
